A modern coastal style interior design for a NC home main room

Interior Design in Wilmington NC

This project was designed in collaboration with A House by the Lake Interiors, a local interior design firm in North Carolina. Together, we created a warm and contemporary open-plan home that reflects the coastal lifestyle of Wilmington while maintaining a timeless and modern feel.

Project Overview: Home design, Wilmington, NC.

This Wilmington home features a large open-plan room that combines kitchen, dining, and living into a seamless great room. The design emphasizes natural light, pale oak finishes, layered textures, and a calm, welcoming palette that ties the entire space together. Each design choice reflects home design Wilmington NC values, highlighting coastal influence, relaxed entertaining, and a balance between elegance and comfort.

Kitchen Concept

The kitchen is the anchor of this great room, designed with both function and beauty in mind.

  • Cabinetry & Finishes – Rift-cut light oak cabinetry with clean shaker profiles sets the tone. The look is elevated with brushed brass hardware and warm detailing.
  • Stone Surfaces – Calacatta-inspired slabs run across backsplash, hood, and a mitered-edge island, giving continuity and sophistication.
  • Lighting – White conical pendants with brass stems bring sculptural interest, while recessed lighting ensures practical illumination.
  • Seating – Woven stools at the peninsula add natural texture and a coastal touch, perfect for Wilmington interiors.

This is a kitchen where interior design Wilmington NC priorities—light, durability, and understated elegance—come together.

Dining Area

At the center of the open layout is a dining zone that connects kitchen and living room effortlessly.

  • Table & Chairs – A light oak oval pedestal table softens circulation flow, paired with fully upholstered chairs for comfort and refinement.
  • Statement Lighting – A sculptural chandelier of slender rods hovers like a cloud above the table, anchoring the space visually.
  • Rug & Layering – A woven rug in soft wheat and ivory tones grounds the dining zone, ensuring warmth and texture underfoot.
  • Indoor-Outdoor Connection – Large sliding doors open to the garden, reinforcing Wilmington’s love for natural light and indoor-outdoor living.

This zone acts as a true pivot point of the home—ideal for both family dinners and entertaining guests.

Living Room Design

The living room was crafted for comfort, conversation, and quiet sophistication.

  • Furniture Layout – Two long sofas face each other with lounge chairs at the fireplace end, creating an inclusive rectangle for gatherings.

  • Color Palette – A base of creamy upholstery is layered with moss and blush cushions, adding subtle depth and seasonal flexibility.

  • Tables & Surfaces – Chunky oak coffee and console tables bring a rustic balance to the refined kitchen stone.

  • Fireplace Wall – Flanked by oak built-ins with LED shelf lighting, the fireplace and TV wall offer symmetry and soft ambiance.

  • Ceiling Detail – Angled ceiling planes and a woven pendant overhead add dimension and movement, particularly at night.
